Alternative Item Types
Speakers: Clarence "Buck" Chaffee, The Caviart Group, LLC
Multiple-choice items have been the mainstay of most credential examinations. As programs have transitioned to computer-based testing, the technology now available allows programs to consider the use of other types of items such as video-based items, drag-and-drop, hotspots, and machine-scored constructed response items. However, just because these types of items are now available does not mean they are well-suited for every program. A test sponsor must weigh the pros and cons of integrating these item types into their programs (Originally Presented 9/8/10)

Beyond Certification Exams
Diversify Revenue, Repurpose Assets, & Maintain Quality
Speakers: Shannon Carter, MA, CAE, Executive Director of the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI), and Denise Fandel, CAE, Chair of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)
Certification serves an important role in setting standards, improving consumer protection, and developing professional practice. However we also know that the altruistic nature of our mission doesn’t render us immune to the market and financial realities that face any other business. Exams are just one way to utilize the tangible assets and intellectual capital that are the foundation of the credentialing business. Exam preparation, evidence based job descriptions, new employee assessment tools, institutional sales and certificate programs are all ways to repurpose business assets and diversify revenue sources.
Ongoing identification of new sources of revenue is necessary to further the advancement of our core mission and enhance organizational financial stability. Doing so within the parameters of quality standards like those published by the NCCA is critical to maintaining credibility and market position. Often organizations choose not to embark on a set of non-exam tactics because they think the “standards don’t allow it.” But what is really advised or allowed by the standards? How do you fully embrace your competency assessment mission and grow your revenue without compromising your commitment to quality or ability to achieve or maintain your NCCA accreditation?
Shannon Carter, MA, CAE, Executive Director of the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI), and Denise Fandel, CAE, Chair of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) will share their perspectives, experience and ideas on these issues and the questions that accompany them. (Originally presented 1/13/10)

Recruiting, Recognizing, Rewarding and Retaining Your Volunteers
Speakers: Cynthia Miller Murphy, Oncology Nurses Certification Corp. and Carol Hartigan, AACN Certification Corporation
A certification organization’s volunteer pool is one of its most valuable assets. The experience, expertise, skills and passion that volunteers contribute to a certifying organization are essential to its success. However, most organizations struggle to recruit and retain good volunteers. Although volunteers often comprise the largest cohort of human resources for a certification organization or professional association, the usual workforce motivators and rewards, such as salary and benefits, do not apply. It is important for organizational leaders to develop an understanding of what motivates individuals to volunteer, what constitutes a positive experience for volunteers and how to develop and retain productive volunteers. This session will present information from research such as ASAE’s Decision to Volunteer, on the motivation to volunteer and provide examples of best practices in recruitment techniques, including the ways that technology can improve results. Key factors in assuring that the volunteer experience is positive, as well as ways to enhance volunteer skills and competencies will be discussed. Methods for assessing volunteer satisfaction and creating a recognition program will be offered. Ways to develop progression pathways and retention plans for volunteers will also be identified. The format of the session will be interactive and audience participation and comment encouraged. (Originally presented 9/30/09)

Based on content from our highly rated NOCA pre-conference session at the 2008 annual educational conference, this two part session is split into an introductory level and more advanced level.
Your organization has a story to tell, but who do you tell it to and how? Will the mainstream media care or is this information best suited for certificants and industry stakeholders? What if your organization is getting media coverage for news you’d rather forget? How do you manage the fallout and mobilize your response?
In the world of credentialing, news is bound to pop up. But managing the "spin," good or bad, is a mystery to most boards, CEOs and executive directors. Experts and representatives from certifying agencies will lead participants through an interactive session discussing marketing and public relations techniques that will help you successfully tell your story. Ted Iliff, executive vice president of the National Board for Certified Counselors and former CNN executive editor, will shed light on how media managers think and react, and how that can impact your organization.
