RSRCH19 Competency Modeling

Description

Competency modeling was identified as an area of interest to Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE) members and the larger stakeholder community. Specifically, its aim is to inform credential owners and other stakeholders on the topic of competency modeling and its potential relevance to professional credentialing. The purpose of this paper is to provide information to enable readers to understand the following concepts:

  • what competencies are and what they are not,
  • what similarities and differences exist between job analysis (also called “practice analysis” or “role delineation”) and competency modeling,
  • how competency modeling is conducted,
  • how it is currently used in human resources (HR) and in credentialing, and
  • what considerations are important
